I can tell you when I criticized Tom Hanks movie recently, I wouldn't exactly call it a case of hopelessness for America. If you travel around america, especially after spending time in china as I did. Flipping back and forth between china and america around 2004-2006. You immediately notice America's air and water supply is much cleaner and the natural forests and the like are clean and tidy. This did not mean NYC didn't have trash on the ground in some places, to study with autistic fervour, but you get the general idea: america clean, china dirty. As much as people on the radio and tv bitch about this and that, you will find government burocrats in the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) doing their jobs. Similarly in Australia, I can't just dump my diesel fuel or engine oil from my boat into the water, someone would likely notice and report it and fines and criminal action would ensue.
If you watch this video from China, you'll see everyone dumps whatever into their waterways and that's a ok with the big scary government in china. Clearly the CCP needs to prioritize what their people's best interests are. Since they are the government and they serve the people, I'd start with cleaning up the waterways if I was Xi Jinping and the politburo and forget about Taiwan. Taiwan probably has super nice waterways due to rule of law, etc. Community pride. China's waterways are nasty. You know the guy in the Coolio video clip in my last post? He wouldn't want to practice his diving in china's waterways, eww. I've lived there I've seen it. Yuck. None of the tap water is even drinkable without boiling. Ridiculous.
