i was going to say that singing the charlie sheen winning song on occasions had become for me a little like the occasional individual in prague, around the mid 1780s or whenever it was that mozart himself brought the opera 'the marriage of figaro' to what is now the czech republic, just as today individuals might be found quoting from movies some popular lines, after a big movie comes out, in those days, individuals might be find singing some lines of a song they liked
then i found this version of 'sussana, o via sortite' by the u.s. army orchestra..... you will recall i am a fan of mozart's marriage of figaro since early childhood and an amateur musician myself, having reached a basic level of proficiency at the saxophone in the entire year i dedicated myself to playing that instrument (age 12), which has more notes than any other, i am also a basic level drummer..... i also mentioned on this blog the time spent with a roommate who eventually became like the 5th best double bass player in the world and invited to play for the berlin philharmonic orchestra....... it was at this time i was hit on the head with a log by some australian aborigines while trying to buy marijuana
here's my musical opinion on the two versions of susanah or via sortite, by the u.s. army and by some professional, top level musicians.... the professional version, and when i say professional i do not mean to denigrate but merely these musicians, their entire life is spent playing music at the highest level.... their version is what you would expect: bold, strident, powerful, unwavering, perfect strings: violins, violas, cellos and double bases providing a powerful, unwavering muscial backbone, the wings of this kind of orchestral music if you will.... this powerful stringed section is notably lacking in the u.s. army rendition of this song... whether this is the composer's fault or some other reason i am not competent to explain..... the u.s. army singing is quite good but if you listen to the baritone of the gotti version, he is clearly a master of his craft and the female singers are deeper, bolder, fuller, more powerful, their rendition is basically flawless.... they do not appear to be amateur (this is not meant with derision)..... the gotti version is completely, unblundering, it is kind of like watching the u.s. military war with iraq, much more proficient!......... the u.s. army version does seem professional though and it's a surpisingly delicate and gentle depiction of this artistic event, not the bombastic fare we are used to, and their woodwind instruments do seem delicate and sound well however maybe they need a better composer or it's a failed recording, the stringed instruments are barely audible, all wrong
