'you are going backwards', what that means for defensive NFL player Malcolm Jenkins

 https://youtu.be/tcFi07b12jY

Howdy fargen shluts.

So I told you on this blog, I'm still learning about football. Coming up in Australia we mostly had rugby, which is ridiculous, as is AFL.

So in football the defensive team would look like this:

Offense: Centre, four other guys

Line of scrimmage

Defensive line: 5 guys like sumo wrestlers the actual line of scrimmage

Then linebackers (another line of about three players behind the initial defensive like that's on the line of scrimmage)

Then maybe two cornerbacks kind of like defenders in soccer out wide a bit

Then kind of at the very rear you have safeties who are like goalies in soccer or defenders

So the linebackers would be like midfielders in soccer but also the cornerbacks depending on the formations

So this Jenkins appears to be some kind of cornerback or midfielder in soccer talk. You'll see him reading the quarterback's throws and looking to cover certain areas or pockets of the field, I guess he's looking to intercept a throw to a wide receiver from quarterback or else an offensive runner with ball. I haven't really studied offense much yet. Still learning.

These videos are pretty good though as they use graphics to show you what's going on.

This guy is Xavier Rhodes. Not being adept at football, it took about three minutes to even realise he's a defender. (Also I've never heard of these guys before). That's also coz it's a very quick game and things are happening very quickly and you can't even always see the ball on the play as the offensive team will also try to hide it. Anyway in light of my new knowledge of defending positions nomenclature and positioning, I'd say this guy is a linebacker or a cornerback or something inbetween if there is such a thing:

This is Jamal Adams, he definitely appears to be a linebacker. When analysing field coverage, whether the analyst is you at home, or the actual player watching videos, they will often divide the width of the field into three equal divisions called 3 or third. The players understand that they'll defend their own sections in given scenarios however they don't only think in straight line terms like third width of the field but might think spatially in round terms, covering a certain radius around them. Essentially many linebackers will watch the quarterback to see if it will be a throw or a running play without the throw:

This guy Minkah Fitzpatrick plays safety. I've only really understood this position today. There are two safeties, a strong safety and the other one. In soccer it's like a defender. If you don't understand soccer styles and positioning, for example you have eleven players and one is a goalie. So some teams have four defenders and some have three. So if you had a four three three that'd be four forwards, very aggressive, like the Italians or Brazilians then three defenders and three midfielders. Also the English might have four defenders alot then just play long balls cutting out the midfield or you might see the Portuguese doing a lot of short passes and a strong midfield.

Anyway this Minkah is a safety so those guys, normally just two, will play nearest their own defensive lines, as a last line of defence kind of thing.

One of the interviewers in this series has a broken pinky finger, very noticeable, so it's safe to assume he played football in NFL.

Switching to offense, this is Davante Adams I think. Not sure who his quarterback is but it's somewhat uncanny how they link up without knowing for sure exactly how. Pretty amazing.

A commercial came up for a Christian Slater, Alec Baldwin new movie, Dr Death, looks kind of interesting, let's have another look at the trailer:

That's gonna make Dr Nick Riviera feel better, someone else drawing eyes of him.  Awesome.
