If you've read the English comedy novel: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, you'd know the cosmic traveller, Ford Prefect, spends long years on earth, possibly longer than he'd planned to. He wrote a very long and intricate description of earth for the interstellar publication: Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Many pages long, featuring long descriptions of Norway's fjords, and what not. In the end, despite his long and detailed description of earth, brevity was considered most important by his editors and many pages were distilled to: harmless. After complaining I think it was amended to: mostly harmless.
Charles Hall in his Millennial Hospitality series makes a point of writing a serious non fiction story about supposed Arcturus based aliens that have a base on earth some forty light years away, who live a thousand year lifespans, seemingly free of evil and sin. These aliens describe earth as a 'desolate wilderness.'
I think both of these descriptions are apt for Australia and especially due to its geographical isolation.
Robin Williams, the comedian, described Australians as, 'english rednecks'. This is also a very good description. In fact, with these three descriptions, it's questionable if I can gild the lily with more descriptiveness. Possibly not. This does not bode well for you if you're from a different country, potentially. Although who knows, maybe Azerbaijan or Georgia are great countries to live in if you're born into the right families and communities, I can't really say.
