what kind of warfare might the future bring?

read this from the ny times:

In 2004, it took more than 13,000 highly trained troops, primarily Americans, almost two months to retake and clear Falluja of about 3,000 insurgents in the fiercest fight of the Iraq war. Ninety-five American service members died, and more than 560 were wounded.
The battle for Mosul, many military experts say, could be much worse. Pentagon officials say they are unsure how many Islamic State militants are in the city, but they have been there for almost two years.
“When the coalition cleared Falluja, it took forever, and Mosul is larger than Falluja,” Mr. Martin, the Iraq expert, said. “And the people who will be doing the clearing are not U.S. troops.”

benji says:

13,000 American troops to clear a hostile city good for nothing...... can you imagine if you got that CRSPR gene editing technology..... introduce a virus into a city's water supply, program the virus to put everyone to sleep for a week. send in the soldiers and everyone is sleeping like a lamb. handcuffs all round..... what a magnificent way to fight a war that would be..... I can't understand how that is not achievable within ten years!  CRSPR technology can do everything! it can save the arab world from becoming irretrievably spastic from too many cousin marriages......... it can neutralize malaria forever! it can make you a better swimmer! CRSPR to the rescue!    sometimes you have to wonder if big interests like big oil and big machine gun and big bomb are against smarter ways of doing things like CRSPR virus sleepy town and solar energy ---- you have to scratch your head
