Book review: Arto Paasilinna (author) Le Meunier Hurlant - the screaming miller

Synopsis 

A small town in the north of Finland, shortly after the war (with Russia), sees the arrival of a stranger who purchases and restores the old mill. Initially well received, the new miller, Gunnar Huttunen unfortunately has one drawback: at the slightest annoyance he takes refuge in the woods to howl at the moon, preventing the townsfolk from sleeping. As such the latter have no other idea then to get him to a (lunatic) asylum. But Huttunen, supported by a local government burocrat, Sanelma Käyrämö, is determined to fight to defend his liberty.

Arto Tapio Paasilinna CISGENDER (Finnish: [ˈɑrto ˈpɑːsiˌlinːɑ], approximately AR-toh PAH-see-LEEN-nah; 20 April 1942 – 15 October 2018) was a Finnish writer, being a former journalist turned comic novelist. One of Finland's most successful novelists, he won a broad readership outside of Finland in a way few other Finnish authors have. Translated into 27 languages (Francais!) over seven million copies of his books have been sold worldwide, and he has been claimed as "instrumental in generating the current level of interest in books from Finland".

Moments later I ran into the Israeli guy from Russia recently mentioned. His wife and kids are born and raised in Israel. There was some crazy old guy outside the supermarket which is uncharacteristic for the sleepy out of the way quiet suburb. The Israeli guy was in the dairy aisle on a scooter motorbike ride around. I mentioned there's no kosher food section in that supermarket but there is one in his area as I use that supermarket sometimes to attend French school so he responded asking if I lived nearby the actual supermarket to which I assented. He didn't seem very chatty, he must be in his 50s and not prone to gushing like a ten year old the way I do sometimes.

One time in the NYC subway I came bouncing down the stairs the way my six year old kid would, humming and singing my little songs. There were some cops or fire brigade guys there, they saw that and one of them burst out in spasmodic laughter and disbelief while the other two stayed impassive. I noticed that but just keep humming along. Ha ha. Happy days. The smoke from the previous visit aforementioned in Manhattan had long cleared up.

I arrived at Mona Vale bus depot around an hour early and put my yellow jacket on outside upon parking my car. You only need it if you're collecting the bus on the bus yard but not if you're collecting it mid route from the public road. I saw I'd have to take it off as I'd be relieving a driver mid route 199. Just as I was about to take it off I fired the spare depot tv up after sticking my halal pizza slices in the fridge for dinner. Well I mentioned those post 9/11 days with Andrew and his pops. One time Andrew and I and Andrew's brother and his friend rode up I-95 to Manhattan from Richmond Virginia, the big smoke. It was really the big smoke as the WTC was still steaming from 9/11 even in October.

So I went to church this morning, uncharacteristically these days as I don't normally do church much these days. Familiar faces from the days my three kids were conceived: July 4th, 2012, the first two kids (IVF), and around 9/11/2016. Hotel.

The theme at church was book of Mark, resurrection of Jesus at the tomb. It has been various years since the last time with these folks. Only a half hour drive from my house and then the drive to bus depot similar time as from my crib so only half an hour from my crib.

That time in Manhattan in 2001 Andrew and I and his brother Paul and Paul's buddy and some kooky impoverished African American called us n sync as we walked by. I don't remember spending a night in a hotel there but maybe we did, it was such a long time.

I think my Australian counterpart, Murphy, his folks made friends with their own US army colonel shortly after this, a woman called Wilma. Paul flew out to Sydney and took a transfer year at college at Macquarie University Sydney and I attended his college graduation in Virginia after a year in China and meeting my (now) spouse in Bulgaria (midway through that year in China).

I remember mentioning I believed it possible my deceased sister Raquel from 1999 (RIP 1969/1999), resurrected as the flesh and blood daughter of one of the preachers at one particular church I'd been attending, well that was the church I was at this morning and the pizza was from nearby the church. It's me [sic] daily bread!

Then we have the aforementioned bitches of Hollywood: Diddy, Will Smith, etc. so I divide these folks in two camps, those my father would refer to as scum of the earth, P Diddy, Will and Jada Smith, Jay Z and possibly Beyonce. Many of P Diddy's colleagues.

I might be willing to classify Jaden Smith as non scum of the earth. In military parlance, honorable or dishonorable. And 50 cents, also non scum of the earth (honorable). Probably J Lo also tipping towards non scum of the earth (honorable).

Wow I never realised 50 cents has such a shitty relationship with his son. I'd be good at running a manage your relationships business. Another curious thing I've noticed in Spain is that everywhere in Spain I have been able to walk about, Russian salad, is available as a kind of tapa entree at basically any bar with beer. Even just as a mouthful aperatif on a tiny plate with a solitary crust of bread. This will likely be provided to you anywhere in Spain for free as a side to a beer. Often a beer in Spain is a very healthy amount of beer like a quarter litre. Which, if you only drank one a day, you would actually be helping your liver according to various scientific studies based on the positive and healthy effects of beer when drunk correctly.

In fact, Spain is one of the few countries in the world where eighteen and even seventeen year old kids can order a small portion of beer in this wise, at a campus bar. In high school.

Russian salad itself is actually originally from Russia and is a staple meal in Russia I believe. Made from mayonnaise, potatoes, asparagus, etc. You absolutely do not need to go through Russia to have it available as I imagine it's probably more available in Spain. How it became so, I don't know, but it just is.

Anyway, some of my gardening customers, an Israeli couple who migrated to Australia like so many others. With a couple of kids around the age of aforementioned Spanish high schoolers, I was talking to the dad, who is free from Russia originally I think. I think his wife was born in Israel. Anyway the husband being from Russia, his worldview is very Russian. I understand from my travels and studies, it's sometimes better to stick to your guns and believe what you believe even if it looks like 'bunk' (rot/rubbish), than not believe in anything apart from hypocritical rot, or a false sense of liberalism. I won't use the word 'bourgeous', so beloved of Marxist Bolsheviks.

Anyway my customer and I were able to agree to disagree without damaging our client/gardener relationship, not only on Russia/Ukraine but post 1947 Zionism. Agree to disagree, focus on having a good client gardener relationship.

I still remember my mother making Russian salad and my sisters discussing how to make the mayonnaise for it (separate yolk from egg white).
