Book review: Arto Paasilinna (author) Le Meunier Hurlant - the screaming miller

Synopsis 

A small town in the north of Finland, shortly after the war (with Russia), sees the arrival of a stranger who purchases and restores the old mill. Initially well received, the new miller, Gunnar Huttunen unfortunately has one drawback: at the slightest annoyance he takes refuge in the woods to howl at the moon, preventing the townsfolk from sleeping. As such the latter have no other idea then to get him to a (lunatic) asylum. But Huttunen, supported by a local government burocrat, Sanelma Käyrämö, is determined to fight to defend his liberty.

Arto Tapio Paasilinna CISGENDER (Finnish: [ˈɑrto ˈpɑːsiˌlinːɑ], approximately AR-toh PAH-see-LEEN-nah; 20 April 1942 – 15 October 2018) was a Finnish writer, being a former journalist turned comic novelist. One of Finland's most successful novelists, he won a broad readership outside of Finland in a way few other Finnish authors have. Translated into 27 languages (Francais!) over seven million copies of his books have been sold worldwide, and he has been claimed as "instrumental in generating the current level of interest in books from Finland".

Moments later I ran into the Israeli guy from Russia recently mentioned. His wife and kids are born and raised in Israel. There was some crazy old guy outside the supermarket which is uncharacteristic for the sleepy out of the way quiet suburb. The Israeli guy was in the dairy aisle on a scooter motorbike ride around. I mentioned there's no kosher food section in that supermarket but there is one in his area as I use that supermarket sometimes to attend French school so he responded asking if I lived nearby the actual supermarket to which I assented. He didn't seem very chatty, he must be in his 50s and not prone to gushing like a ten year old the way I do sometimes.

One time in the NYC subway I came bouncing down the stairs the way my six year old kid would, humming and singing my little songs. There were some cops or fire brigade guys there, they saw that and one of them burst out in spasmodic laughter and disbelief while the other two stayed impassive. I noticed that but just keep humming along. Ha ha. Happy days. The smoke from the previous visit aforementioned in Manhattan had long cleared up.

I arrived at Mona Vale bus depot around an hour early and put my yellow jacket on outside upon parking my car. You only need it if you're collecting the bus on the bus yard but not if you're collecting it mid route from the public road. I saw I'd have to take it off as I'd be relieving a driver mid route 199. Another curious thing I've noticed in Spain is that everywhere in Spain I have been able to walk about, Russian salad, is available as a kind of tapa entree at basically any bar with beer. Even just as a mouthful aperatif on a tiny plate with a solitary crust of bread. This will likely be provided to you anywhere in Spain for free as a side to a beer. Often a beer in Spain is a very healthy amount of beer like a quarter litre. Which, if you only drank one a day, you would actually be helping your liver according to various scientific studies based on the positive and healthy effects of beer when drunk correctly.

In fact, Spain is one of the few countries in the world where eighteen and even seventeen year old kids can order a small portion of beer in this wise, at a campus bar. In high school.

Russian salad itself is actually originally from Russia and is a staple meal in Russia I believe. Made from mayonnaise, potatoes, asparagus, etc. You absolutely do not need to go through Russia to have it available as I imagine it's probably more available in Spain. How it became so, I don't know, but it just is.

I spent almost four hours in a row on one client's garden today, installing like a little strip in a little trench I dug, then hammering in pegs to hold it. Author Note

Sebastián Vizcaíno (1550?-1615) was an established merchant in the trade between Mexico and Asia when he gained the royal license to explore and settle the Gulf of California. In 1596, he led an expedition to establish a colony at La Paz and explore the inner coast of the Gulf. However, he abandoned the project before year’s end because of severe weather, loss of equipment and supplies, low morale among the settlers, and other difficulties.

Vizcaíno Expedition of 1602-1603

Spanish galleons engaged in trade between the Philippines and Mexico returned to Mexico by sailing north to Japanese waters and capturing westward currents that took the boats to the coast of northern California. From there they turned south towards Acapulco. The Spanish sought to establish a port of call on the California coast that would establish Spanish claims to the area and provide a place where their ships could stop for repairs and to allow sailors to rest after the voyage across the Pacific. In 1599, the Viceroy of New Spain selected Vizcaíno to lead an expedition to explore the California coast to find a site that would meet these needs. He was to collect detailed information about weather, shoreline features, water depth, and other resources, information that would facilitate settlement. Vizcaíno mapped the California coastline and assigned new names to coastal features that replaced those Cabrillo had given sixty years before (see AJ-001).

The expedition began May 5, 1602, with two ships, a frigate, and a long boat moored in the Bay of San Bernabe. They set sail from Acapulco, Mexico. At Mazatlán, they crossed the Gulf to Cabo San Lucas and proceeded north along the Baja California coast. On November 10, Vizcaíno reached the place that Juan Rodríquez Cabrillo had named San Miguel and renamed it San Diego. After ten days charting the bay, the expedition continued north. On December 14, Vizcaíno discovered and named Monterrey. From there two of the three boats proceeded further north. Although Vizcaíno tried to turn around at Cape Mendocino, a storm blew the ships northward, with one going as far as Cape Blanco in southern Oregon. On January 21, Vizcaíno finally did head south, arriving back in Acapulco on March 21, 1603.

I have this octostrap thing. You can tie down branches and stuff with the four double ended plastic stretchy hooks. A ladder for clearing gutters or climbing higher for hedging or whatever.

One of my regular customers Kyle, he'll just get me round like once every three months to trim his olive plants which grow around the perimeter of his little backyard. Recently he pioneered the double ladder with plank technique for me so I can just walk a few metres on a sturdy metallic plank or wood, can't remember, between his two ladders. While hedging with the extension hedger, about four yards or so in length, requires muscle.  That's a tricky job, I have to go to the neighbours yard and hold the four metre trimmer above my head to reach six metres plus. Very muscular in a particular way. Sunglasses again useful. That's a very catlike job as I find myself standing on a six foot high fence in incredibly precarious positions being poked by olive branches, very tricky but ultimately enjoyable.

If it's crazy hot like 100 degrees and it's passout hot I wear a wide brimmed hat and long sleeved shirt which is soaked in sweat keeps me cool enough. It's a workout! Good for the heart.

My son turned eleven today. We got Thai restaurant and a fancy cheesecake.

With my gardening business I have a five battery array. Two batteries for the long wand for weed whacking and long hedging and three batteries for the two blowers and short hedger. They go in a sturdy green carry bag like with a glove or something and an electrical four socket array to plug everything in from the bag in folks' garages and backyards etc.

Another tool that's indispensible is the hand digger. It's well made, quality item so it can dig big holes or cut through roots etc. unlike the shrewd steward in the famous parable, I'm not too proud to dig holes. However I prefer not to dig seriously deeply as the work is too hard. I recently broke someone's shovel like that. I can generally recharge everything all day long while I work, including from my utility vehicle's cigarette lighter while I'm rolling between jobs. 

I have a tarp on hand to cover any load for occasionally carting off. A really old 1970s or 1980s or earlier edition lawn mower. These older mowers are better. The new Chinese stuff is all garbage. I'm looking purchasing a self propelling mower for around $500 u.s. maybe this year as pushing the mower is damaging to my back and spine. I also carry a rake, I have a new one now, plastic. And one or two watering cans for distributing glysophate poison, weed killer. I'll use other stuff like a handheld bottle trigger or an electric mini mower, etc, as need arises. Business is good. I can make $911 a week gardening. That wouldn't include two winter months June and July. Thinking to go to new Caledonia this winter and brush up my French skills. 

I also drive a bus one day a week, often on a weekend day for double time or time and a half. People have to make some coin....

They got Weekend at Bernie's playing at the bus depot, and upstairs TV has fox news. I got 90 minutes pre shift time to starve and chill. Bernie just had an Islamic kind of bath courtesy of the Atlantic Ocean high tide starting to wash his body away. I never really believed he was really dead but what a classic movie.

This is fast number 8 for moi, and as yet, I have never completed correctly due to drinking coffee throughout the daytimes, including sugar. There is starvation and weightloss nevertheless. 

Wow Bernie's really getting washed away. Today's the first day and I've already pre purchased breakfast which is six pieces of kfc (halal) hot and spicy chicken. Which will be at approximately 745pm due to the summer and daylight savings. I don't think I've eaten before sunrise more than say five times in roughly 210 days fasted already.

It's a slog however I feel in sync with all the other hundreds of millions of folks out there going through the same thing otherwise there's no way I'd be doing this every year as food is a major avenue of pleasure.

Wow I never did understand how's Bernie's woman could have sex with him while he was dead and not notice. I guess Bernie's two houseguests couldn't understand either. No-one can understand women.

Man I was just talking to a colleague, Steve, at the bus depot. He could be my first casual employee. About my gardening business. I'm definitely thinking to hit new Caledonia this winter (like June July) like a month to improve my French. I'm totally not an illegal over there as it's part of France and I'm a Spanish citizen. 

It'd be good to sail in and out however I'm not bringing my boat. It's not far away.

Hours later, while bussing at 812pm I have breakfast. It was a late breakfast. Then half an hour later at the depot a cold coke Zero can. Like an hour or so later a banana then a beef pastry, large. Probably not halal. Now fox and friends are on and it's live. My belly is full. It's just after eleven pm and I have twenty minutes then it's bus to city and back and probably drive home.

Tomorrow I should complete two gardening jobs then buy some discount used sneakers.

Hey wow 🦊 news is showing their prayer app and saying prayers for Lent. I was a little confused or unaware of a lot of things. Why the term Easter in English. Then I went sailing in a gusting westerly breeze in Easter with my two kids, everything became clear. Today while my son was in sailing class I got a tender ride out to my neighbour's catamaran for a neighbourly coffee and chat. Today's discussion touched on Christianity. I tried mentioning the concept of inner and outer self as raised in the gospels with Jesus's mentioning to the Pharisees the difference between their outer and inner selves: clean whitewashed graves (outer self), full of rotten Stinkies bones (inner self). Classic example. Phil wouldn't have a bar of it. He was raised Anglican private school and hates the example they set. Is reactionary anti Christian. So we established the chap that supervised the building of his indoor pool back in the day was named Jesus something (some kind of Hispanic). Problem solved.

I remember one time like right at the start of 1996 I flew into Amsterdam, age 19, to visit my no good sister who I'll refer to as Cleopatra, so as not to use any real names. She's like that Leroy Brown in the Leroy Brown song: no good. Anyway I'd just graduated high school and worked a year and saved up a bunch of money and had no other plans apart from spend my time and money in Spain (that went on for eighteen months approximately).

Anyway somehow I end up in some downtown Amsterdam nightclub alone, like with no buddies. I think it was on this early January 1996 occasion although it could have been some other time. There was this drop dead gorgeous Dutch girl with a tall strong body like mine, but an absolute knockout figure, knockout face, gorgeous hair, a ten.

For some reason, she must have liked me, she decided to put on a dance show in the little Dutch boutique niteclub just for little old me. I can still remember sitting in a plush chair right next to the dancefloor, probably too timid to dance with her, just enjoying how amazing she looked and enjoying her smiling at me and looking at me the whole time. Sometimes you just need extravagant stuff like that, even if you're not a billionaire.

Ok so Wednesday and Thursday no gardening, just sick with tonsilitis and taking my antibiotics. Today, Friday, was able to do a couple hours work although I was a bit wobbly. Then did a tiny spot of gardening at home, after showering, also before that job, transplanting tomatoes.

Ok so later I tried downloading some film.edits from my Google photos account to a laptop hard drive. It's a project I started with my two daughters about 19 months ago. The copy on Google photos is fine however it's not transferred well to disc so not sure why.

Then just before lights out, Pulp Fiction is on SBS from the scene where both of Marvin's buddies are dead but he hasn't left the room yet. Anyway so my daughter is saying like in real life eventually the car with the dead body at Monster Joe's would be discovered. I agreed to some extent and she fell asleep. It reminded me of this case of a Los Angeles PD art detective that got charged with an old murder....
