The ABC ran an audit into racism amongst they [sic] ranks and found:
Examples of racism from the ABC’s report
Overt
Preventing workplace opportunities due to “a non-Australian” or “non-Anglo” accent.
Comments such as “diversity hire”, “You only got this job because you are Indigenous/CALD [culturally and linguistically diverse]“, “You won’t lose your job because you are meeting a quota”.
Mistaking someone for being a trespasser in the workplace
Covert
Mistaken identity with people from the same cultural background.
Comments such as “Your voice/look is too western Sydney”, “You know people out at the western suburbs right?”
Not having a full range of skin tones in makeup so darker people are misfitted into lighter shades.
Being asked to do work but without acknowledgement – stories are given to white colleagues to present or to take credit.
Among the recommendations, the review said the ABC must improve its responses to public attacks on staff, diverse representation in its leadership and management, recruitment processes and pathways, and conduct regular pay audits.
Some things I noticed when I was living in Spain as a sixteen year old:
1) a wall over two thousand years old built by the Romans in León. I'm not aware of the Australian people building any lasting walls two thousand years ago. It's not racist to observe that the Roman use of cement features certain stones which give their cement long lasting features thus Roman walls built before Jesus are durable. Crucifying Jesus possibly a racist hate crime, unquestionably Roman, as the Jews in Palestine stoned victims to death not crucifying them. Pemulway spearing an Anglo Celtic possibly or likely could be construed as a racist hate crime. Newsflash: humans kill.
2) the Spaniards were immensely aware and happy with their long history. On some level. Some Spaniard high school teachers seemed shocked when one of various visiting high school teachers from Long Island NY asked if a particular building was 'authentic'. However as with many utterances of the Americans, the question was sound. On the Spaniards side, Spain is full of old buildings, consider the two thousand years old wall in León. Many buildings in Spain date back hundreds and hundreds of years, also in Britain you see this, especially in England. Some Spanish buildings are old and picturesque and used as models by Walt Disney for his fairy tales. On the other hand buildings get bombed in pan European wars strongly featuring German munitions from 1936 through nine years later. It's not unreasonable to think an old building in Spain was destroyed by a German bomb then rebuilt from scratch, thus not being 'authentic'. Consider Dresden. Furthermore, it does seem that the Spaniards are in denial about the civil war in general.
3) newsflash, Australia was an English country right up to 1971 when the white Australia policy was abolished. Coinciding with the Vietnam war. The English were numbering up to ten million or so through to 1971. With a generally predominantly English culture, it's not unusual to see the English in Australia banning Irish from certain clubs, dictating in more or less fascist way what and how anything to do with first Australians (see comments on Pemulway above) could be, consider non citizenship until the 1960s and stolen and massacred people.
4) whereas the Americans and Europeans benefitted from close proximity and interrelationships nurtured by less distance, the opposite was true for Australia, being faraway and distant. The culture became hardscrabble, aloof, isolated, bigoted, forgotten, irrelevant. Any attempts at civilization were meritorious. Incapacity to shake off Anglo Saxon precedents and find a new culture: the Anglo Saxons in Australia were always proud of their monarchy and ability to replicate England abroad. It's in their DNA, they define this as being 'Australian'. First Australian identity is considered jealously as something to be usurped.
5) incapacity of Australians to develop their own culture. NY is over five hundred years old and was Dutch. The southwest was Spanish, the Louisiana purchase always a Franco American affair. America is over five hundred years old and has developed its own culture, legal system, etc. Canada and Australia, despite being geographically separated and having vastly different weather systems, both have British styled systems of governance. These systems do not have healthy and realistic approaches to studying their own history. It's not difficult to study British history, there are many things like the Republican movement with Cromwell, the wars with the Irish (completely understudied). Wars with France. However like Nietzsche's shopfronts and how they're arranged, you're just not seeing folks in Canada and Australia know their own history. In Europe, it's a feature of every country that they actually learn their own particular history, even in England.
