Candy bus, last Saturday of summer holiday

 

Drove with the Mrs and our two daughters down Pennant Hills Rd, avoiding the $10 tunnel then jumped onto the M2 which also costs around $10. A long pink Hummer limousine turned right in front of me, coming off the M2 from the city direction and turning north onto Pennant hills rd around North Rocks area there; and I noticed merging into the westbound traffic, destination Raging Waters water theme park western Sydney, a giant disco coach for parties going the opposite way. It had a giant 'Candy' written all over the rear quarter on the side and disco bus or something like that at the front.

Talking of candy. I mean it has gelotine in it and God knows what other rejected animal parts like intestines. Industrial intestines have cow shit all through them which is bleached out but still nasty. I know in Spain companies like chupachup, Spanish for suck suck, will absolutely use eyeballs, intestines, brains, anything the butchers can't sell. Just add sugar. Me avoid-y, I don't want to eat pork in any form including gelatine. I found in Australia there's only one local company making real chocolate from cocoa these days, actually a New Zealand company called Whittaker's, so I'm happy to pay approximately double to get the real deal. Plus it's very dark so apparently healthy. I think with the Bulla brand of ice cream I can also get proper healthy ice cream instead of fake palm oil, vegetable oil crap.

I find if I eat too much on a given day I can end up with high blood pressure leading to headaches.

Don't ask me how I do the Ramadan fast every year, nine times now, I definitely drink coffee all day with milk however I find given my predisposition to eat a lot I wouldn't be able to do it apart from hundreds of millions of other people doing it probably makes it easier.

I'd never really given her any thoughts until now. However I read an article by her recently, or quotes from her recently and I have to say some of our beliefs overlap.

Valence came to fame in Australia with TV show Neighbours. My opinion of this show since early childhood until now has always been one of certain certainty and I always thought it was rubbish. Try going up to a French person and asking them if they like Lord of the rings movie or something. They won't.

One of my buddies is an Australian tv producer and I generally think 96% of Australian tv is absolute rubbish. I don't let that get in the way of my opinion of this fellow one whit. In fact many things are rubbish: like driving a bus.

In other words, I'm not in Holly Valence's target audience for her music or theatre stuff however this doesn't close my mind to anything positive I think she might have to offer.

Valence married a billionaire. Yes a billionaire. Newsflash, if you prick a billionaire he or she still bleeds. Like Shakespeare's Shylock, billionaires have feelings too. They're just people. Anyone's opinion can matter. 

Differentiating carrying weight to mattering (is that a word?) I'm remembering walking through a tunnel or the like in Guangzhou China in 2005 or late 2004 perhaps. I'd probably already met my wife briefly over the course of a month, seeing her daily on weekdays in the classroom as one of the students, a 21 year old woman in Bulgaria. She wasn't on my mind despite swapping a few emails and a friendly date with no kisses or hand holding. It was the people in the tunnel, thousands of Chinese people everywhere. All their opinions mattered. However their opinions had little weight. China not being a democratic country.

What Valence says that resonates with me, "everyone starts out a left winger but then you start making money, having kids, building your business, and you realise their ideas are dopey." I'm paraphrasing there but that's the main gist. As the Australians like to say, she's not wrong. Of course there are more nuances. NYC is a case study in left wing politics that goes beyond this paradigm and there are many nuances to right wing policies too.

I would think with Valence's partner, the billionaire, with whom she had two kids, a huge commitment, his interest in right wing politics would mostly rest in tax minimisation. I never heard billionaires saying that they want to pay 50% taxes like in France. They'd rather manage their own money like anyone else.

Pivoting to another topic apart from the wisdom of Valence. Why do people feel entitled to offer their opinions openly and unasked for? Obviously if you're like Valence part of your career is PR, dealing with the media, having an agent or publicist. You might need to deal with the media regularly to enable your business schemes. Even just if you're a billionaire like Valence's partner. Now the media is reporting their marriage is on the rocks however it's difficult to know the facts from the media and like all brains, we filter in or out relevance based on difficult to understand brain chemistry psychological principles often with zero regards to reality. And that's not even mentioning the heart. Which we'll get to in a moment.

Returning to Valence's comments, incredibly sensible and intelligent regarding the lefties and wokeism. 

Obviously I'm offering my unsolicited opinions here on my blog. In the case of a billionaire that could get you sued for defamation right? But more generally, have you ever noticed folks around you offering their opinions? Probably women more so acting bitchily but men too, also acting bitchily. Maybe I should start selling T-shirts. One of them should say, Please don't offer me your dopey opinions.

Australia Day 2026.... Red Herring, Sydney harbor

Howdy y'all .... Wassup?

This year as I have Red Herring in Sydney harbor already, I'm thinking to drop an anchor near the harbor bridge and watch the tall ship display between Sydney harbor bridge and the opera house. Spectators not allowed on the water on the tall ship side of the harbor bridge, ie., the opera house side, during certain parts of the day. In the evening there will be another event near the opera house on the water so maybe I can bring Red Herring in closer then.

Thinking to bring the urn with my mother's ashes, supposedly, in them, although who knows what you get at funeral homes these days, maybe someone else's ashes. Thinking to drop those ashes near the bridge and keep the urn for my own ashes one day when I die. 

I recall after my mother passed away in late July 2020, her best friend, a First Australian from the stolen generation came by with her daughter, that died of cancer the following year. And the daughter's partner who the mother, Marlene, my mother's friend, never liked much (ie., her son in law). Anyway in the end over the following few days I visited Marlene's little tribe who just happened to all be in town at the time notwithstanding their nomadic lifestyles. And distributed a lot of my mother's keepsakes to them like jewellery, silver jubilee fifty cents coins and special Australian coins like that. It was certainly a unique and eye opening experience as I normally never associated in close proximity with a fully functioning First Australian tribe*. But there's always a first time for everything. It was a kind of honour I suppose. I once got a guided tour of the largest Navy base in the united states (Norfolk Virginia) from a bird Colonel once shortly after 9/11. That was obviously an honour. I was a little taken aback perhaps when the Colonel asked me if I could shoot a man in the face in a general non specific speculative way, but he was an imposing fellow; some of his acquaintances died in the Pentagon on 9/11. Still an honour. 

* One thing I remembered about this tribe was the photographs they kept on their walls of famous political events and protests and the like that they had attended in the 1970s or 1980s, perhaps when Goth Whitlam was in power. Similar to the invasion day protestors these days. I remember wondering if it could be possible that a famous Irish writer like James Joyce could be born into a First Australian family. I've also wondered if many First Australians from centuries ago could reincarnate into upstanding and well heeled Anglo Saxon families in Australia of long-standing good repute (ie., certain family members not the entire family). Sometimes the truth can be stranger than fiction, for a surety.

We left home around 1110am and a little late for the midday tender service to Red Herring at Balmain which meant we wouldn't catch the fighter jet flyover. Instead I stopped at 300 Burns Bay Rd to picnic by the bay there with the family. A few days earlier Alex and I tried to enter this bay after passing along Woolwich wharf and Riverview high School however we got stuck on the bottom at low tide and were conveniently rescued by some teenagers in a speed boat. A lady faraway was doing Tai Chi and I started mimicking her movements at the picnic area today 26th January 2026. It turned out she couldn't speak English so we started talking in Chinese and she said she'd been in Australia a total of seven years. Lived in Jilin province previously, in China. And had visited Dongying in Jilin although probably spent less time there than his Benjiness. No big deal just chatting away in Chinese then on to the marina to Red Herring and on to the harbor bridge where we passed numerous aforementioned tall ships. We did hear the fighter jets shortly before chatting with the lady from Jilin at 300 Burns Bay Rd. But we couldn't see them.
